Where clinically appropriate, the WPA Health and Wellbeing Helpline will arrange an onward referral to a Structured Counselling service for you or your family member. The counselling that is available is short-term, solution-focused counselling which is a Brief Therapy model and within the confines of an allotted six sessions, each lasting a maximum of 50 minutes.
The Brief Therapy model means that there are a maximum number of sessions available when you engage in counselling. It will start with an assessment, an important step in the counselling process. The assessment will establish whether Brief Therapy is appropriate and agree the aim of the counselling.
Conditions often suitable for this type of therapy include:
More complex issues such as: complex bereavement/loss; court cases; psychological or physical injuries; trauma (recent or previous); family-therapy; gender issues; abuse and gambling/alcohol/drugs are not suitable for the Brief Therapy model. The helpline will be able to signpost you to an alternative route as appropriate.
The Structured Counselling benefit is provided by the WPA Health & Wellbeing Helpline Provider, which is a third party providing the 24/7 helpline subject to their terms and conditions, which may be amended from time to time.
The Structured Counselling benefit will only be available if the WPA Health & Wellbeing Helpline Provider, in their sole discretion, consider it clinically appropriate. It is not available to anyone under 16 years of age.
The Structured Counselling benefit is available 24/7 all year round and can be used by calling the WPA Helplines (numbers are provided within the WPA Health app and your WPA literature).
This is an optional benefit on some schemes. Please check your benefit schedule for details.
